FAQ - Destination Weddings In Norway

Legal wedding: We will book a legal officiant for your ceremony and the ceremony will be legally binding and you will get a wedding certificate. Check out our FAQ What is a CNI - Certificate of non-impediment? for more information about CNI and getting legally married in Norway. 

Symbolic wedding: Your wedding ceremony in Norway will not be legally recognised. Perhaps you already got the paperwork done back home. For the symbolic wedding we will book a symbolic celebrant to officiate. 

To legally marry under Norwegian law, you must apply for a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) before your wedding.

First you must get your documents certified in your home country. Then the documents must be mailed to Norway. Once the Norwegian authorities have received your documents the application process typically takes about six to eight weeks. Once issued, the CNI (or license) is valid for four months. Some applicants experience delays in their home countries, and documents can also be held up in customs. Therefore, it's essential to begin this process early.

This may sound complicated, but we're here to help. We've never had a couple who didn't receive their CNI.

Yes. No matter the season you choose, Aurland and Flåm provide a naturally breathtaking canvas for your wedding celebration. The fjords offer endless possibilities for a unique and unforgettable experience, allowing you to create a wedding that truly reflects your love story.

In the winter (December-February) you get the opportunity to embrace the magic of a winter wonderland. Aurland and Flåm transform into a winter paradise, blanketed in pristine snow. Imagine a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the snow-covered landscape leading to your ceremony, or exchanging vows under a sky ablaze with the Northern Lights (visible on clear nights with strong solar activity). While temperatures remain low, averaging around -5°C (23°F), cozy indoor venues with crackling fireplaces will keep you and your guests warm and comfortable.

A humanist officiant is someone from the Humanist Association who is a certified legal officiate. The humanist ceremony is a romantic, non-religious ceremony based on human values. Having a Humanist ceremony is more of a journey of love and values. The humanist officiant meets with couples beforehand to plan their ceremony where you can discuss options like your own vows, kiss, ring exchange, romantic reading or handfasting.

A symbolic celebrant is someone who conducts the wedding ceremony, but can not legally marry you. The ceremony is romantic with vows, rings etc. but will not be legally recognised. 

Yes. Two people of the same sex can get legally married in Norway. Don’t forget your CNI - Certificate of non-impediment if you are planning on getting legally married in Norway. For more information on CNI check out our CNI FAQ.

Easily! There are four steps:

1. Planning: Send us a wedding inquiry, answer some questions about your vision for your wedding and we create your all-inclusive package. If you’re happy with the package, the planning phase is basically done. If you would like to customise your package we make changes to it. Once you’re happy with the package you have sorted out all the major details for the big day.

2. Travelling to Norway, woo hoo! so make sure you’ve packed or pre shipped to us items you need for the wedding ceremony, make sure you have a valid passport and check if you need a travel visa(VISA requirements also on our FAQ section). If you have pets, don’t forget pets need a passport too. Check out Toll - the official Norwegian customs page for up to date and accurate information.

3. Say I do! At one of our waterfront fjord ceremony venues, enjoy amazing food, get stunning wedding and continue your love story as spouses.

4. Enjoy your honeymoon and vacation in Norway!! Because a destination wedding is also a great opportunity to experience everything Norway has to offer. Check out our travel guide section made by locals with travel routes, travel tips, things to see and things to do. 

Planning your wedding in Norway is something we have spent years trying to make as easy and stress free as possible. 

1. Send us a wedding inquiry.

2. We follow up and you answer some questions about your vision for the big day.

3. We create your personalised all-inclusive package.  If you’re happy with the package, the planning phase is basically done. If you would like to customise your package we make changes to it.

4. Once you are happy with your package it’s time to talk to friends and family and see who would like help making accommodation arrangements. 

5. If you wish to get legally married you must get what is called a “certificate of non-impediment” or CNI. We have put together a step-by-step PDF guide that walks you through the CNI application process. We will help you with this.

6. Make sure passports and visas are sorted out. 

7. Sort out optional but important wedding day details like: Outfit, rings, handfasting cord, Spotify playlist, flowers and alcoholic drinks. 

Maybe. Some people need a visa when travelling to Norway and some don’t. You do not need a visa to visit Norway if you:

• Hold a passport from a country that Norway has a visa exemption agreement with.

• Are a citizen of a country that has an agreement with Norway.

• Already have a residence permit or visa in Norway.

• Have a residence permit in a country which has an agreement with Norway.

• Have diplomatic, service and special passports.

• Are flight crew members and border residents in the Barents Region.

• Are refugees with special travel documents.

• Are seafarers with special travel documents.

Many couples start planning their wedding or elopement 12-18 months ahead of time, but some couples book their weddings just a couple of months ahead of time. It depends mostly on how quickly you can get details sorted out on your end and whether or not you would like to get legally married.
No matter when you start planning, remember to:

• Prioritize the most important aspects: Focus on the elements that matter most to you, whether it's the location, the photography, or a specific vendor.   

• Be flexible and adaptable: Destination weddings and elopements can involve unexpected challenges, so it's important to be open to adjustments and have backup plans in place.

We offer several waterfront fjord venues, mountaintop venues for the more adventurous, mountainside venues with fjord views, rustic barns and lodges. For larger groups we also offer restaurant venues.

Adventure elopements are for 2 - 19 guests.

Fjord Weddings are for 20 - 100 guests.

In Flåm and Aurland you might see northern lights when:

• Strong solar activity: During periods of very strong solar activity, the Northern Lights can be seen further south, including in Flåm and Aurland. However, these events are unpredictable.

• Winter months: The best time to see the Northern Lights in general is during the dark winter months, from late September to early April. The darkest months (December and January) offer the best chances.

• Clear skies: You need clear skies to see the aurora. Cloudy weather will obscure the view.

• Tips for trying to see the Northern Lights in Flåm and Aurland:

• Get away from village lights: Head out of the village center to reduce light pollution. Hiking trails or open areas away from buildings are good options.

• Check the aurora forecast: Use a reliable aurora forecast app or website to monitor solar activity and predictions.

• Be patient: Even with favourable conditions, seeing the Northern Lights is not guaranteed. Be prepared to spend some time outside in the cold and dark.

While it's possible to see the Northern Lights in Flåm and Aurland under the right conditions, it's not the most reliable location. If you're determined to see northern lights, consider venturing further north or planning your trip around periods of predicted high solar activity. Yes. But Please review the guidelines for travelling to Norway with pets on Norwegian customs and Mattlisynet - the Norwegian Food Safety Authority.

Some generel guidelines:

• pets must have microchips, 

• Pets must have health certificate or pet passport, anti-rabies vaccination, anti-Echinococcus treatment 

• Pets must be checked in at a your point of entry to Norway or EU/EEA country. 

• Some breeds of dogs are not allowed in Norway. 

Pick up can be arranged anywhere. Let us know if you and your guests would like to get picked up and we will arrange transport. 

We recommend flyting to Flesland, Bergens International Airport as this is the closest international airport. However flights to Oslo international airport might be cheaper and we can pick you up there as well.

It’s also possible to travel to Flåm and Aurland with public transport. We recommend busses as they are more reliable than trains.

For a satisfying visit to Aurland and Nærøyfjord, we'd recommend a stay of 3 to 4 days. This will allow you to experience the highlights at a relaxed pace and enjoy some of the activities the area offers. Here's a possible itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive in Flåm (the main village in Aurland) and settle in. Take a scenic fjord cruise on the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord, which is a must-do. This will give you stunning views of the dramatic landscapes.

Day 2: Get married! 

Day 3: Ride the Flåm Railway, a breathtaking train journey up to Myrdal. Consider hiking or biking back down for a more immersive experience. You could also visit the Stegastein Viewpoint for panoramic views of the fjord. If you have time you could take a longer hike, explore more of the Aurlandsfjord by boat,

Day 4: Explore the surrounding area. You could visit the charming village of Undredal, known for its goat cheese, or go kayaking or hiking in the fjord landscape. or visit nearby attractions like the Borgund Stave Church.

Why 3-4 days is ideal:

• Sufficient time for key activities: This timeframe allows you to experience the main attractions without feeling rushed.

• Flexibility for weather: The weather in the fjords can be unpredictable. Having a few extra days gives you more chances to enjoy outdoor activities if the weather isn't ideal on your first day.

• Opportunity for deeper exploration: You can take your time to appreciate the scenery, visit smaller villages, and engage in more active pursuits like hiking or kayaking.

• If you're short on time, you could in addition to getting married technically see the main highlights in 2 days, but it would be a more packed itinerary. If you have more time, you could easily spend a week or more exploring the wider fjord region and enjoying activities like fishing, glacier walks, or multi-day hikes.

The ideal length of your stay depends on your interests and how much time you have available. But for a good balance of sightseeing and relaxation in Aurland and Nærøyfjord, 3-4 days is a great starting point.

Norway is a geographically long country, surrounded by sea and forests, and full of mountains and fjords. This means travelling takes time and the quickest option by far is flying. Some travel times from Flåm:

Bergen to Flåm, 2.5 hours by car, 3.5 hours by public transport

Oslo to Flåm, 4.5 hours by car, 6 hours by public transport

Trondheim to Flåm, 6.5 hours by car, 14 hours by public transport

Kristiansand to Flåm, 7 hours by car, 12 hours by public transport

Lofoten - Svolvær to Flåm , 24 hours by car, 30 hours by public transport

Tromsø to Flåm, 25 hours by car, 1.5 to 2 days by public transport

Some of our venues have parking available, but not all. For the couple getting married our SUV will be available all day and this is included in your package. But please let us know if your guests require parking and we will check availability and reserve parking spots. If parking is not possible we can arrange transport.

Our weddings ceremonies, lunches, photoshoots and dinners are usually outdoors, but we have indoor venues as well. The reason why we plan for outdoor venues is the magnificent fjords and mountains in Aurland and Flåm that regardless of season are simply a breathtaking backdrop for your wedding. 

Aurland and Flåm really are all-Season locations to celebrate your love. nestled amidst majestic fjords in Western Norway, they offer a captivating backdrop for your wedding, regardless of the season. The region boasts a temperate climate with distinct seasonal variations, each adding its own unique charm to your special day.

Spring (March-May): Imagine exchanging vows under a sky bursting with fresh colors. Spring awakens the fjords with vibrant greenery cascading down the mountainsides. Gentle breezes carry the sweet fragrance of wildflowers, creating a breathtaking scene for your wedding photos. This shoulder season offers pleasant temperatures, often hovering between 7°C (44°F) and 15°C (59°F), with fewer crowds, making it ideal for a more intimate celebration.

Summer (June-August): Bask in the warm embrace of the Norwegian summer. Long daylight hours present endless possibilities for your wedding celebration. Yes. Flowers, wedding dress, alcoholic drinks, and pretty much anything you can send via post can be stored at our offices for storage until your big day. 

Yes. We offer live streaming of the ceremony if your family and friends wants to watch. A lot of couples find this helps satisfy their families whilst not actually being present.

As part of your all-inclusive package we include:

5 hours of photography including ceremony, bridal portraits, event details & landscapes.

30 photo proofs individually remastered per photography hour

10 full resolution downloads per photography hour

All images are uploaded to a password protected, private online gallery. You create a profile, select the pictures that you want, and send them to us. In an all-inclusive package, you have 10 images per hour included, meaning 50 images in total.

You can purchase all images from us by paying a fee of 4000 NOK. This is great because then you don’t need to spend time selecting just 50, plus you get more memories from your special day.

70% of our clients choose to purchase all images.

We also offer several extras you can add to your package for even more beautiful memories captured in picture and video:

• Drone videos and photos

• Simple video clips taken throughout the event

• Professional video editing (video clips and photos set to music)

• Photo slideshow

• Professional videographer services

For an all day wedding package you have 5 hours of photography included. This is a contractual minimum, but you do get photography during the entire wedding day, from ceremony to dinner included).

If you’d like extra photoshoot (such as getting ready as a bride or groom), then you can add extra hours of photography for a fee of 2 500 NOK / each extra hour. Usually 1 extra hour is enough in this case.

If you want to purchase all images from your wedding, you’ll have to pay an extra fee of 4000 NOK.

Otherwise, there are no extra costs, unless you want to add extra services.

The images are fully edited.

During your adventure elopement or fjord wedding you will experience our SUV photoshoot adventure to the best viewpoints and nature spots for your elopement photography. Couples absolutely love this. Photography is included throughout the experience. This is the part where the elopement and wedding really becomes an adventure, embracing anything that happens in the wild nature. From animal encounters, to crazy weather changes, we love it all. We will take you to epic locations and capture dramatic landscape bridal portraits, and other beautiful moments.

There are several options for your guests while you are on your SUV photoshoot adventure.

• Transport back to their hotels for rest and relaxation in the hotel.

• Mingle while enjoying drinks and snacks.

• Group sightseeing, fjord RIB boat tour and other activities.

Extra guest activities can be added to your package for an added cost.

Whether you prefer meat, vegan, vegetarian, or pescatarian options, our local chef will ensure you and your guests enjoy delicious, locally sourced meals. Let us know about your dietary preferences and food allergies, and we will take care of the rest.

The catering features handcrafted food prepared by a local chef, providing a gastronomic experience that connects you to the local heritage.

For weddings and elopements with fewer than 30 guests, we offer a fjord charcuterie BBQ lunch accompanied by tales from the fjords, served directly at the ceremony venue.

For weddings and elopements with more than 30 guests, we provide a canapé-style half lunch. This culinary experience is known as Culture on the Plate – highlighting Norwegian nature and food culture. Local handcrafted products are sourced from our local sheep farmer and caterer.

The BBQ Lunch is a large buffet of local fjord taste. It’s a local gastronomic experience. We offer everything that the fjord produces and we can cater for special requests. It can include different types of meats and cheeses, as well as vegetarian and vegan options.

If you have special requests or a special diet, you can tell us and we’ll come with alternatives.

For dinner it's the same situation. We serve local produce. The caterer decides what to serve close to the event. We can serve different options like deer, reindeer, moose, goat, cattle, vegetarian, vegan, etc.

We are open to tweak the package for your taste. 

Yes. Lunch and dinner are included in your all-inclusive package but may be removed for a cheaper option. However, we strongly recommend having a food plan, as being hungry is not optimal for your wedding ceremony and photoshoot.

Yes. There is always bottled water in the car. Non-alcoholic champagne, wedding cake, lunch, and dinner are included in your package. The cake and non-alcoholic champagne will be served immediately after the wedding ceremony. Following that, a fjord charcuterie BBQ lunch will be provided. Later in the evening, guests can enjoy either an outdoor three-course dinner or a rustic fjord barn dinner. Non-alcoholic refreshments will be served alongside both lunch and dinner.

There are several options for catering. Our all-inclusive package includes catering from our local caterer. However, for larger groups with more than 20 guests, it is also possible to book lunch and dinner with other local partners.

We do not sell alcoholic drinks, but you are welcome to bring your own. You can purchase items back home or online and have them shipped to us, or you can buy locally. In Norway, supermarkets are only allowed to sell alcoholic drinks with less than 4.6% alcohol. If you want anything stronger, you must visit a Vinmonopol liquor store. They sell pretty much any type of alcoholic drink you might need. You can also preorder online, where the selection is very good.

Yes. We have three pricing tiers for guests:
Tier 1: Ceremony, drink, and cake
Tier 2: Ceremony, drink, cake, and lunch
Tier 3: Ceremony, drink, cake, lunch, and dinner

Children aged 12 years and under receive a 50% discount.

The beautiful sand mixing ritual is great for those looking to add a symbolic touch to their wedding ceremony.

• Personalization: You can include specific anecdotes, inside jokes, or promises that resonate deeply with your shared history.

Yes. We have beautiful vows scripts and many couples choose these. For some writing their own wedding vows can be a beautiful and personal experience, but there are some valid reasons why it might not be the right choice for every couple:

• Pressure and Stress: The thought of writing heartfelt vows in front of an audience can be daunting and anxiety-inducing for some people. If you're already feeling overwhelmed with wedding planning, adding this task might increase your stress levels.

• Difficulty Expressing Emotions: Not everyone is comfortable expressing deep emotions verbally or in writing. If you find it challenging to articulate your feelings, you might struggle to write vows that feel authentic and meaningful.

• Time Constraints: Writing heartfelt vows takes time, reflection, and effort. If you have a busy schedule or are planning your wedding on a tight timeline, you might not have the time to dedicate to crafting personalized vows.

• Preference for Tradition: Some couples prefer the traditional wording of classic wedding vows, finding comfort and meaning in their time-honored expressions of love and commitment.

Yes. The following extras can be added to your package at extra cost:

• Private 2 hour guided fjord RIB boat excursion approx. Up to 12 person per boat and there are 5 boats available.

• Hair & makeup styling with a professional stylist.

• Flowers: Fresh flowers, preserved flowers or pick you own flowers from local nature

• Music: Fiddle player for the ceremony, Soprano, local bands.

• Guest transportation: ceremony transport, airport transfer, transport for added guest activities.

• Horse and Carriage for your ceremony.

We don’t have confetti, but you can bring some from your home country or buy some online and have it posted to our offices. We will store it for you and hand it out to your guests at your wedding ceremony venue.

Some of our wedding ceremony wedding venues are wheelchair accessible, however at some venues there are slopes where wheelchair users will need assistance. A couple of our venues are not wheelchair accessible.

There are many amazing locations in the area. If we talk about Flåm & Aurland as a location, we usually recommend one of these options:

• Propose on the terrace of a private fjord venue (this is a great option and the photographer can hide, so the future fiancée doesn’t suspect a thing);

• Up on the mountain road during your photoshoot adventure (for this you need a decoy story - maybe say that you booked a couple photoshoot in the fjords);

• On top of the mountain plateau (as a part of your photoshoot adventure - here you need a decoy story as well);

• Propose during an outdoor fjord romantic dinner;

• Pop the question on a private yacht while cruising the dramatic fjords (this comes at an extra cost depending on the yacht)

• We are also open to suggestions from your side!
